Plastic Dog Crates For On-The-Go Pups
Plastic dog crates are vastly different than wire crates but can prove to be incredibly helpful. If you have a pup that’s constantly trying to escape, plastic crates may be your best bet; they’re nearly impossible to get out of, and you can purchase crates large enough for just about any dog. They have much more privacy than normal crates, which can keep them from whining at you. They also have much more insulation than wire crates which is great for dogs who are constantly cold. Additionally, they can feel a lot safer to dogs that are always anxious.
We love that the plastic crates usually have a removable top which can allow the crate to become a regular dog bed when you don’t need to lock up your pup. This can also help your pup get more comfortable with the crate before traveling. If you’re constantly on-the-go you can also find airplane approved plastic crates that are light and easy to pick up. If you have a large or heavy dog, it’s only practical if you can find plastic crates with wheels that are easy to move around.
We would highly recommend plastic dog crates for dogs that are constantly traveling with you. They’re easy to carry around, are typically airline approved, and make road trips a breeze. If plastic dog crates aren’t for you however, you can also check out our favorite soft sided crates, heavy duty dog crates, or wire dog crates.
SportPet Plastic Crate
The SportPet crates are a tremendous help to any dog parent traveling. Whether you have a 5 lb. chihuahua or a 90 lb. Great Dane, you’ll be able to find a SportPet Crate that comfortably fits your dog. Available in 5 sizes ranging from small to XXL, they’re ideal for just about any pup. The small is designed for dogs up to 15lbs and is 24″ x 16″ x 16″; the XXL is designed for dogs up to 90 lbs with dimensions of 39″ x 27″ x 30″. If you check out their Amazon listing, you’ll find all the interior size and weight specifications for each crate size. Additionally, all of the larger crates are designed with easy to assemble wheels and two handles to make transporting the crate extremely easy. This is definitely one of the easiest crates to travel with.
Petmate Compass Kennel
Petmate has a variety of dog and cat crates to choose from, and their compass kennel is one of our favorites. If your dog or cat is an escape artist, this is the perfect travel crate; it’s nearly inescapable. How? It has safeguard bars on the top and bottom of the door, and spring loaded latch rods. The door can either open to the left or the right, and both sides lock with rotary locks. Your dog or cat will have an extremely hard time trying to force their way out of this crate.
Fortunately, if your dog needs an escape proof crate, this crate is available in six sizes to fit just about any breed. The smallest size is designed for pets up to 10 lbs. and is 15″ long x 7″ tall, and the largest size holds dogs up to 90 lbs. and is 36″ long by 24″ tall. The crate also meets IATA & USDA standards, so it’s airline approved. It’s also great for traveling because it has full 360-degree ventilation and an oversized doorway to keep your pup comfortable. There is, however, one pretty big downside to this crate, it doesn’t have a handle on the top, which can make it difficult to carry around, especially with the larger sizes.
Petmate Sky Kennel
Another great Petmate product to add to the list. As you can see, Petmate definitely makes quality products, and at a reasonable price. For the most part, we have only minor complaints about any of their products that we’ve tested. The Petmate Sky Kennel is a more heavy duty option, ideal especially large dogs. The crate is available in six sizes, making it a comfortable travel size for just about any pup. The smallest size has dimensions of 21″ L X 16″ W X 15″H, and the largest size has dimensions of 48″ L X 32″ W X 35″H and can support dogs up to 125 lbs. However, keep in mind that the interior dimensions will be a tiny bit smaller than these dimensions.
The crate is made of durable plastic that won’t corrode and can hold heavy pups. However, we did discover that the nuts and bolts are all durable plastic, which won’t be airline approved. If you’d like to take this on a plane all you’d have to do however is replace the plastic bolts with metal ones. While not ideal, it is an easy fix. The crates also all arrive with live animal stickers and water & food bowls, and have great air ventilation; therefore they are, for the most part, ideal for airline travel. For the price, you’re definitely getting a quality product. If you’re in the market for a heavy duty way to transport your pup, this is a great choice.
Suncast Deluxe Pet Carrier
The Suncast carrier is a great lightweight kennel for traveling. This crate is incredibly lightweight; which may not make it durable enough to withstand flight. The crate is designed for animals up to 17.5 inches tall; however, we found this crate to be much larger than we expected. The actual dimensions of the crate are 24 x 17.5 x 18.5 inches, and it only weighs about 12 pounds. Like most quality carriers, it also includes a handle at the top for carrying and food and water bowls.
If you do decide to take this on long trips or flights, it does have great air circulation. It also has easy access compartments that allow you to easily store snacks, treats, and anything else your pup may need. Considering it’s lightweight yet sturdy design, it’s great for car trips; you can easily stack other things on top of the crate and keep your pup comfortable all at the same time.
The AmazonBasics crate is another easy to use crate. The assembly is quick, and it’s also lightweight, weighing under 5 pounds. You can purchase the crate in one of two sizes; the smaller sizes is 19x12x10 inches, and the larger size is 23x15x13 inches. The crate is made of durable plastic and a steel wire, to keep your dog safe and secure no matter where you travel.
We love that the top and bottom of the crate easily snap together with four latches; this allows you to make the crate a bed for your pup when they don’t need to be locked away. You’ll also find that there are two doors, a front door and a top door. The top door opens from two directions making it incredibly easy to get your pet in and out. We did, however, notice that the top of the crate is the least durable part of the crate. When you pick up the crate with the handle, the plastic seems to bend a bit, keep this in mind if you’re going to be carrying a heavy dog around, this could become an issue.
