Owning a pet transforms your world into a lifelong obsession. From dog-themed accessories to dog-themed mugs, as a dog parent you are delighted to come across almost anything with your furbaby’s name or breed. Hey, we understand! And it is part of the pet parent experience! This Holiday season, we picked out three great custom pet ornaments to fulfill any pet lover’s obsession. In particular, these ornaments allow you to personalize their details and cater the product to your unique adorable pup.
Ornament #1: The Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Kit
The Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Kit allows an owner to use their pup’s paw in a unique ornament creation. It is completely customizable because, upon receiving the kit, you will be in charge of designing and making the actual product. While there are plenty of other kits on the market that do the same thing, the Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Kit has received the best customer ratings. Furthermore, it is extremely affordable: hovering around $10 in price.
The kit includes one pack; measuring 4.2 x 1.2 x 5.5”. In specific, this pack comes with 3 oz of oven-bake clay, one roller, one red ribbon, one tool to write with and/or create holes, one ring for cutting a circle from the clay, and one set of instructions.
We think it is very important that the Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Print comes with oven-bake clay. This type of clay is very easy to work with and is simple to harden in any home; all you need is an oven! Instead of having to wait long hours for an entire process, you will more than likely be done creating your ornament in under two hours.
Additionally, once hardened, your oven-baked clay is completely safe to paint or decorate in any creative fashion! We absolutely love this feature because it enables any pet lover to truly get creative. Not to mention, what a great activity for the kiddos! If you’re at loss for a special Holiday craft for when the little ones are off school, the Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Kit is a fabulous answer.
Steps to Ornament Creation
By and large, you do not have to be an art major to create your own dog ornament. While the Sculpey Keepsake Deluxe Pawprint Kit will come with a set of instructions, we will also provide you with its simple steps below:
- Shape out your clay and use the roller to smooth over.
- Press your dog’s paw into the clay.
- Use the ring to cut out your desired circle shape around the paw print.
- Use the detail tool to write in the clay. Use the detail tool to poke two holes in the upper portion of the clay for your ribbon to thread through.
- Bake on a non-stick cookie sheet for 30 minutes at 375 degree Fahrenheit.
- Pull out of oven and let cool.
- Once cooled, decorate and thread through your ribbon to make a loop.
- Hang on tree!
It is highly recommended to cut out your ornament using the circular ring after creating the paw print. Then, you will be able to best center the paw print within the circle. If you cut a circle before creating the paw print, you run the risk of an unpredictable pup ruining their special ornament!
Additionally, one customer noted that you will want to purchase more kits if you plan to create ornaments for a number of furbaby’s. Unfortunately, the kit will not provide enough clay for more than one dog’s prints.
Ornament #2: Cades and Birch Personalized Pet Ornament
This personalized pet ornament comes from a custom craft company based in California. Their name: Cades and Birch. In short, we fell in love with this ornament option because it is both USA made and hails from a creative small company. By purchasing the product, you will be offering small business support! It makes our hearts burst with pride to show off their beautiful ornament.
The Cades and Birch Personalized Pet Ornament depicts a horizontal dog bone shape. On each side of the bone, there is a hole that enables a thread or ribbon to be attached. A pet’s name is engraved in bold print with two cute paw prints engraved below. Basically, the pet’s name is the portion that you can customize. For example, you may wish to put your own dog’s name. All-together, the ornament measures 4” long x 2.25” tall x 1.8” thick.
The Cades and Birch Personalized Pet Ornament is extremely lightweight because it is birch wood made. The light nature allows the ornament to easily hang from a tree without bending limbs. Furthermore, its material is less breakable than others. Imagine hanging a glass bulb while your excited pup bounces around, yikes!
In the end, we simply fell in love with the Cades and Birch Personalized Pet Ornament. Its simple, rustic aesthetic creates a beautiful décor. Additionally, you just can’t beat the price! You can expect to pay under $10 for this ornament.
Ornament #3: LifeSong Milestone Personalized Pet Ornament
Like our previous pick, the LifeSong Milestone Personalized Pet Ornament has a rustic ambiance with dog bone shape. Unfortunately, it is the least customizable of the three. You will be able to insert your pup’s name, but all the fonts and other text will remain the same. Luckily, the company gives you two options to choose from. The first includes the text “Puppy’s First Christmas.” The second features the text “HoHoHo Furry Christmas.” All-together, each designed ornament measures 3” tall x 5” wide.
We do love that the LifeSong Milestone Personalized Pet Ornament is USA made. If you are familiar with our product reviews, you are aware this is often a deciding factor for us.
The ornament is formed from Alder wood; making a sturdy yet light feel. Unlike metal or ceramic, the wood material allows an ornament to hang lightly on your tree. Additionally, the material is a perfect match for pups in the house because it is not easy to break!
Although the LifeSong Milestone Personalized Pet Ornament is our last pick, it is still an excellent option. So far, the product has not received any negative customer reviews. You can expect to pay around $20 through Amazon purchase.
Extra Tidbit: the DIY Salt-Dough Ornament
Sometimes you simply run out of time to order products and, before you know it, Christmas vacation is here! If you’re in a pinch but still want a unique paw print ornament, you can easily DIY it. In fact, salt-dough is a well-known little trick among moms and dads out there. While is does take awhile to bake in the oven, this form of “clay” provides a fun and easy way to personalize a pet ornament.
What You’ll Need
- ½ cup hot water
- ½ cup salt
- 1 cup flour
- Plastic cup or circle cookie cutter
- Paints, glitters, Mod Podge (aka any decorations you like)
- Family dog on hand!
Steps to Ornament Creation
- Mix together flour, salt, and hot water. Knead the mixture together until it forms a ball of dough. (hint: too sticky? Add some more flour!)
- Roll out your dough until it forms a thickness you desire.
- Use the plastic cup or circle cookie cutter to cut out as many circle shapes as you need. (hint: cut out a couple extra as back-ups)
- Use your pup to gently press his/her paw into the dough circles.
- Use the straw to poke two holes in the top portion of you un-baked ornament.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Transfer your un-baked ornaments onto the backing sheet. Next, bake them at 225-degree Fahrenheit for 2 to 3 hours. You will need to check them at the 2-hour mark to see how much longer they need. The ornaments are done once firm and dried out.
- Decorate with creativity!
Pet ornaments are yet another superb option of showing your love for dogs. We dug through many ornament products and settled on three of our favorites to bring your way.
First, the Sculpey Deluxe Keepsake Pawprint Kit enables an owner to fully customizes their ornament through the use of oven-baked clay. Second, the Cades and Birch Personalized Pet Ornament provides you with the opportunity to support small business in the USA. Third, the LifeSong Milestone Personalized Pet Ornament uses cute Holiday text; adding Christmas flare. Finally, if you simply run out of time to order one of these options, our DIY salt-dough recipe is a handy backup!
