Evening Walks

Many dog owners like to take their pups for walks around the neighborhood in the evenings. While this can be a way to decompress after a long day at work, you should be cautious in the evenings. It can be hard to see dogs (and people) at night, even if the sun hasn’t gone all the way down. Fortunately, there are a variety of products out there made just for keeping your pooch safe at night! Check out some of our favorites below.

general tips for evening walks

In general, nighttime is the most dangerous time to be walking your dog. If you’re smart about it, however, you can reduce the risks tremendously. Most likely, the biggest threat toy our pup will be cars. It’s very hard to see humans (and especially dogs), walking on the side of the road. If you can plan out a route that has sidewalks the whole way, you should be golden. If you must walk on the road, make sure you walk against traffic. This will allow you to see all of the oncoming traffic, and you’ll be able to tell pretty quickly if a car can see you or not. If they can’t see you, you’ll be able to move into the grass before they get to you. The last thing you want is a car coming up behind you and surprising Fido.

You should also have a leash with you at all times. Even if your dog is well-trained as an off-leash dog, you never know what you’re going to encounter on your evening walks. A car could get out of control, an animal could scare them, and more.

As long as you’re aware of your surroundings, and what Fido is up to, you should be able to have a safe and fun walk with your pooch no matter what time of day.

noxgear lighthound

glow harness

The Noxgear Lighthound is one of our favorite nighttime accessories for dogs. The harness contains 8 very bright colors that make it very easy for you, and even drivers on the road to see your pup. It also has 6 flashing and slow fading color modes to catch other people’s attention better. Even when you’re simply sending your dog outside, these are helpful in keeping an eye on your dog when it starts getting dark. The colors are visible from every angle so you’ll always know where your pup is and what they’re getting into.

This harness is made from fiber optic cables and 3M Schotchlite reflecting technology, so your pup will always be highly visible. Even better, it doesn’t require batteries. You’ll have 12 hours of life out of the harness after every charge, so you won’t have to deal with wires very often!

You’ll love this harness because of how easy it is to use and how comfortable it is for dogs. It’ll go on quickly, and has a convenient leash attachment for walks. This harness is also machine washable, and of course, completely waterproof. No matter what the weather, this can be your go-to harness. It’s also highly adjustable so the size you order doesn’t necessarily need to be the “perfect fit”.

GOMA Reflective Leash

The GOMA leash is not only a well-made durable leash, but it keeps your dog safe at night as well. The rope is made from a shock-absorbent material that won’t allow your dog to hurt you when they pull too hard or jerk the leash around. The leash is also padded, so you won’t have to worry about burning your hands from all the rubbing.

reflective leash

Of course, the reason we like this leash so much is because of its reflective material. When cars drive by, they’ll see Fido right away, keeping both you and your dog safe on late night walks.

This leash is available in either 4 feet or 6 feet, and three fun colors; red, green, and blue. All varieties are 1/2 inch thick, great for dogs of all sizes. Check out the varieties on Amazon, and you’ll have peace of mind when walking Fido at night.

Higo LED Leash & collar

glowing leash

LED leashes help keep both you and your pup visible on evening walks. This leash has great visibility even at dusk. It has TPU LED light-guiding tubes that allow the entire leash and collar to glow. This leash also has reflective strips that will glow when headlights shine on them. Even if your dog doesn’t walk with a leash, the collar is a great addition to their wardrobe. It will allow you to see them when they’re playing in the yard or walking around by themselves.

With this leash and collar combo you’ll never have to worry about losing Fido in the dark. It has three different flash modes, and of course a solid mode. The leash uses a 70mah lithium battery that lasts 3-4 hours (on the steady mode), or 12 hours on slow flash mode. It can then be recharged, and it typically only takes about 2 hours to complete the charging process.

This leash isn’t a gimmicky glowing accessory that will die out on you; and you don’t have to sacrifice durability for visibility. The leash has a solid metal hook that attaches to the collar, and the handle is padded with neoprene. In our opinion this leash is well worth the price. It’s dependable, comes with a lifetime guarantee, and is super bright. You can purchase the leash in either pink or green from Amazon. The leash is 47″ long, and the collar is available in 3 sizes.

Keep in mind that the collar is sold separately, so be sure to check out the collar as well!

Safetypup reflective vest

You may have noticed as you drive down the road how easy it is to see joggers that wear reflective vests. It’s almost impossible to ignore them. Dogs are even harder to see at night than people. They’re much lower to the ground, and typically much shorter than a car’s hood. A reflective vest will help your pooch be seen by all drivers, day or night.

The SafetyPup Vest is very comfortable for most dogs. It’s available in 5 sizes, and made from a soft, breathable oxford weave fabric. It has adjustable straps to help give your dog a snug fit without producing chaffing. As you can see this vest is a very bright color. This will help drivers see your dog both day and night.

cool-shop flashlight leash

Sometimes flashlights are simply easier to use at night. If you don’t have street lights in your area, we highly recommend this type of leash. You can see exactly what you’re walking to, and other drivers will know there’s a pedestrian walking around. This will also help Fido see where they’re walking. They can avoid rocks, glass, and anything else that you don’t want them stepping in.

The Cool-Shop leash is one of our favorites. The handle comes with a super 9 LED light that can be detached during daytime walks. Simply pop AAA batteries in and you’ll be ready to go. The leash itself is impact resistant, sturdy, and made with eco-friendly material. The grip is rubber, comfortable, and has an instant brake. It’s one of the most durable and useful retractible leashes we’ve reviewed.

This leash has a 16 foot wear resistant and tangle free cord. We find that it has great control and allows you to keep your dog in close proximity easily and safely.

We highly recommend this leash to anyone that needs a little bit of extra light at night when they’re walking their pooch. It has sturdy construction, a bright light, and is under $20.
