The Best Toys & Treats

christmaspuppy

Christmas is a great time to look for indoor and interactive toys for your pooch. Oftentimes, it’s too cold to go outside for long periods of time. If your pup is cooped up all day they may gain weight, or partake in destructive behavior caused by boredom. Fortunately, we’re on the lookout for engaging toys that Fido can play with inside or outside, that won’t destroy your house! From puzzle balls, to treat puzzles, and fun holiday treats, we’re reviewing all of the best holiday toys for dogs.

You should always keep in mind the weather when you’re purchasing Christmas toys for your pup. If you live in a region that gets a lot of snow, you may want to avoid white toys or toys that will easily get destroyed if your dog manages to bring them outside with you. You should also keep in mind that your dog’s sense of smell will be muffled if it snows a lot; you may not always be able to depend on them to find their toys just through scent. We like to give our dogs strongly scented toys to play with, or at the very least, toys that are very easy to spot in the snow. Unfortunately, this also means that it can be hard for your dog to find their way home if the weather takes a turn for the worst (or better, if you prefer snow!).

multipet duck

duck toy

If your dog loves plush toys, we have the perfect Christmas gift for them. This may seem like a simple furry duck, but trust us when we say; hundreds of dogs have made this their new favorite toy! It’s a great texture, the perfect size for a variety of breeds, and flops like a real duck would. Our furry toy testers think this is the perfect indoor toy for games of fetch, tug of war, and even chewing. And while this toy may not last an eternity (let’s face it, plush toys never seem to stick around), your pup will literally love it to death.

This floppy toy is long and skinny, making it deal for tiny pups, all the way up to gentle giants. It weighs under 2 ounces, and is 13 x 4 x 9.5 inches. You can purchase this duck in a variety of colors, but we promise each one is just as fun as the rest!

Trixie Puzzle Boards

puzzle boards

Puzzles are a great gift for just about any occasion. They’ll keep your dog occupied, and help to deter destructive behavior caused by boredom. The Trixie Puzzle Boards are a best seller, and now we know why! They’re available in a variety of levels, so once one puzzle gets too easy for your dog, simply advance them to the next level with another board! The “training” level is easy enough for any pup, and you can advance them as often as you’d like. With these boards your pup will exercise their brain and bodies to find the various treats hidden throughout. In our opinion, this is a must for food motivated dogs. Below you’ll find descriptions of all the various puzzles you can try out for your furry friends.

level 1

The level one board is set up like a gambling tower. You can hide their favorite treats all throughout the tower, and your pup earns them by tugging on rope loops. There are also 3 base cones that have hidden compartments where you can hide additional treats for your pooch.  The tower is 10 x 10 x 13 inches, and weighs 3 lbs. It also has a non-slip rubber sole that will prevent your pup from knocking the whole thing down when they get too excited.

level 2

flip board

Is your pup ready for level 2? Well, this flip board may be right their style. It has various lids and disks that your pup has to figure out how to move around in order to gain access to their treats. You can use as many or as few treats as you’d like to increase the difficulty levels. Your pup will either have to flip the lids up using the side nobs, or slide the disks to the side. The board is made with sturdy plastic, and won’t flip over or crack when your pup starts getting excited.

The Poker Box is another level 2 puzzle board you can try out for Fido. There are four boxes of fun that you can either place together on the board, or use separately. Each box is opened differently, allowing you to challenge your dogs four fun ways each time they play. This poker board also comes with a booklet that shows you new fun ways to challenge your pup. The board has treat lids, knobs, flaps, ropes, and drawers. The whole board is also dishwasher safe making cleanup a breeze.

level 3

chess puzzle board

If your pup has mastered level 2, and they’re ready for another challenge, this chess board is a great first step. This board has 4 levels that require concentration and practice on the part of your pup. During level 1, you pup will have to lift the cones up straight in order to reach their treats. Level 2 requires them to move around the various sliders to reach the treats. The third level allows you to stack sliders on top of each other. The final level allows you to places cones between sliders that must be moved around first.

The Move2 Win game is another great level 3 puzzle board for your pup. This board has 4 levels as well. The first level requires your pooch to lift the cones straight up. The second level requires them to tug open the drawers; level 3 makes them push the slider knob along a special path to open the drawers, and level 4 has them move the cones. There are a variety of fun ways to play with this board, and its unique design prevents your pup from tipping it over or moving it around accidentally.

The mover toy is another fun level 3 puzzle board that you can try out. It has four games that allow you to switch up playtime and keep your pup occupied. The first game has your dog lift the cones straight up to get their treats. The second game requires them to move the sliders around with their nose, the third game requires them to move the red knob to open the drawers. The final game has them open the drawer by pulling on the rope with their teeth.

Rubber Balls

rubber balls

For some reason, dogs just can’t have too many balls. In our opinion, these rubber balls are a great addition to the toy box, especially during the holiday season. Their vibrant colors makes them ideal for playing in the snow, and when it starts to get dark. These balls are made with 100% all natural heavy duty rubber that’s thick, durable, and safe for dogs. Traditional tennis balls can be bad for your pup’s teeth; these rubber balls are safe for heavy chewers, and are perfectly fine for both active and passive playing pups!

These balls are 8.3 x 2.8 x 2.8 inches, so they fit in just about every ball launcher out there. Your pup will go nuts for these balls because their rubber material makes them super bouncy. No matter where you are; the grass, pavement, or even indoors, your pup will have a hard time keeping up with the bounce. We think these rubber balls make a great stocking stuffer for your pooch when Christmas rolls around, and you can purchase a pack of three from Amazon for under $10.

Booda Fresh 'n Floss

This rope toy is a great way to clean your pup’s teeth and keep them occupied after all of the extra holiday snacks they’re going to get. The Booda Fresh N Floss is a great way to help your dog achieve fresh breath and a healthy smile while they play. Of course the rope fibers help to floss your dog’s teeth and scrape away and plaque and tartar like all rope toys. However the Booda Fresh’n Floss also works to give your dog fresh smelling breath. The rope contains dental floss twisted in with the all-natural cotton fibers! Your pup is getting a fresh minty floss while they chew away at this rope. The floss is non-irritating and will help to sooth your dog’s mouth and gums while they chew.

So what makes this rope so great for your dog’s teeth? The rope is a great combination of both cotton and mint-scented floss. The rope fibers have a great taste and the nylon fibers are even coated with wax to give your dog a safe floss. The fresh’n floss also contains baking soda to fight plaque and control tartar. Your pup will have a healthy mouth, and great spearmint scented breath!

This toy is designed just like the Blue’s Choice Rope, with a braided body and multiple knots on the rope to prevent your dog from destroying the fibers. You can purchase the rope with either 2 or 3 knots depending on your dog’s chewing level and size. The medium is 2.5 x 2.5 x 19 inches, the large is 3 x 3 x 24 inches, and the extra large is 3.5 x 3 x 32 inches.

kong round braidz

round braidz

Kong’s Round Braidz are one of our favorite soft dog toys. They’re made with a soft fleece materials that dogs love to cuddle up next to. They’re also great for roughhousing and heavy chewing sessions. The Round Braidz all have a unique braided body structure that not only cleans your dog’s teeth but polishes them as well – not many toys can do that! Dogs love these toys because they not only squeak but have a unique shape and durable limbs that they can chew on. The fabric is incredibly thick on all variations, and they’re large enough to handle even the biggest bite. The Round Braidz are available in one size, with dimensions of 11 x 6.6 x 4 inches. Though they seem large, they only weigh 4.6 ounces, making them easy to carry around.

kong extreme tire

If you have a tough chewer on your hands, the Kong Extreme Tire may just be what your pup needs. This tire has a thick outer tread that gives the tire a great bite barrier for aggressive chewers. This tire is made right here in the USA, and is available in two sizes to suit the needs of any breed. The large is 4.5 x 1.5 x 6.8 inches, and the small is 3.5 x 1.3 x 5.8 inches. These tires are great because you can stuff them with your favorite treats, and let your dog go wild with them. The tire rolls, bounces, and makes the perfect chew toy.

jerky sticks

jerky sticks

The Rocco & Roxie Jerky Sticks are a favorite treat for many pups. These treats are healthy and natural, and of course, delicious. The sticks are free from artificial flavoring, corn, soy, and gluten. This makes them great for dogs with allergies. Your dog will go absolutely nuts for these treats. They have a great chewy texture, and are slow roasted for 10 hours to create an all-natural, rich flavor.

Each treat is 7 inches long, and they can easily be broken into smaller pieces for tiny pups. Fortunately, they don’t have a greasy, smelly residue, so you won’t get left with stinky hands after breaking them up for your pooch.

fruitables

Fruitables are one of our favorite treats (and our dogs like them too). They have a great crunchy texture, and are small enough for even the tiniest pups. Additionally, they come in a variety of fun flavors that your pup will jump for. Around the holidays, you may want to try out the vanilla snowflake flavor. This will give you pup a special treat that won’t upset their stomachs (like table scraps will).  These treats are all-natural, made in the USA, and are a delicious low-calorie treat perfect for the holidays. The only downside to these treats is that they are a bit price (close to $10). However, if you sign up for a Woof Pack subscription, fruitables are included in some of the monthly packages.
